The Lincoln cent (or sometimes called Lincoln penny) was first struck by the United States Mint in 1909. The obverse or heads side was designed by Victor David Brenner, as was the original reverse - a very simple design bearing two wheatheads in memorial style framing the denomination and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Curving around the upper border is the national motto, E Pluribus Unum, Latin for "From Many, One."
